As you leave behind the high peak of the Pyrenees, you will enter into the Sobrarbe, an area that will enchant you with its stunning diversity. You will need to organise your time to see all there is in this region:
Visit the village of Ainsa, classified as the most beautiful village in Spain, and Boltaña, whose old town is one of the largest in the Pyrenees.
These pearls -some hidden, some not- are scattered around the Mediano reservoir. The villages of Usana with their tunnels and traditional architecture, Gerbe with its breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Mediano reservoir, Abizanda with its tower and puppet museum, Samitier, its chapel and castle overlooking the Entremón - a magnificent natural canyon between the two reservoirs...
Don't leave without "admiring" the church tower of Mediano, which emerges from the waters, a reminder of the harsh consequences of dam constructions in the 1960s. You will then understand why the locals call it "the Lady of the Lake".
In the Fueva Valley, the fortified complex of Muro de Roda and the restored holiday village of Ligüerre de Cinca also watch over the tranquillity of the waters.
For lovers of old stones, a visit to the landmark monuments of Lombard Romanesque art in the region is a must: The Monastery of San Victorian and the Chapel of Espelunga at the foot of the majestic Peña Montañesa, the churches of San Juan de Toledo and San Vicente de Labuerda or the magnificent Plaza Mayor in Ainsa.
When the water level allows it, the Mediano reservoir becomes the epicentre of a variety of activities, which will give you another perspective of the landscape, seen from the water. Monte Perdido in the distance, Peña Montañesa in front of you, the sunken churches of Mediano and Plampalacios behind you and the turquoise waters of the reservoir surrounded by pine cliffs and dominated by fortresses such as Muro de Roda or Samitier will not leave you indifferent. Don't hesitate to visit the many guide offices where you can enjoy a canoeing, paddling or zodiac trip and admire the beauty that surrounds you.
On land, Ainsa and Boltaña are perfect places to do some shopping, have a drink and eat in one of the many restaurants that will welcome you with open arms.
